\nBenedict's solution is a chemical reagent commonly used to test for the presence of reducing sugars, such as glucose, in a solution. It contains copper(II) sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium citrate, which together allow it to act as a redox reagent. \n

How to work the Benedict's solutions:

\n
    \n
  1. Reducing sugars, like glucose or fructose, have free aldehyde or ketone groups that can reduce the copper(II) ions (Cu²⁺) in Benedict's solution to copper(I) oxide (Cu₂O).
  2. \n
  3. When Benedict's solution is added to a sample and the mixture is heated, if a reducing sugar is present, the solution changes color due to the formation of copper(I) oxide precipitate.
  4. \n
\n

Color change indications:

\n
    \n
  • Blue: No reducing sugar present.
  • \n
  • Green: Low concentration of reducing sugars.
  • \n
  • Yellow/Orange: Moderate concentration of reducing sugars.
  • \n
  • Brick-red: High concentration of reducing sugars.
  • \n
\nThis test is commonly used in food science, biochemistry labs, and medical applications to detect sugars like glucose in urine samples.
