How to work the Benedict's solutions:
\n-
\n
- Reducing sugars, like glucose or fructose, have free aldehyde or ketone groups that can reduce the copper(II) ions (Cu²⁺) in Benedict's solution to copper(I) oxide (Cu₂O). \n
- When Benedict's solution is added to a sample and the mixture is heated, if a reducing sugar is present, the solution changes color due to the formation of copper(I) oxide precipitate. \n
Color change indications:
\n-
\n
- Blue: No reducing sugar present. \n
- Green: Low concentration of reducing sugars. \n
- Yellow/Orange: Moderate concentration of reducing sugars. \n
- Brick-red: High concentration of reducing sugars. \n
