This reference for English speakers is based on classical Arabic dictionaries and classical Qur’an commentaries on occurrences of the finite vocabulary items used in the Qur’anic text. Definitions are explained with examples of Qur’anic verses, along with cross-references to other usages. The dictionary follows the Arabic root system and is composed of 28 sections, each devoted to one letter of the Arabic alphabet. Special attention is paid to 100 grammatical words (particles, nouns, and verbs) that occur in the Qur’an, among the most frequently used words in the text. Their features particular to the Classical period and to Qur’anic discourse are explored in detail.
